IMPORTED APPLES
NO TARIFF REVISION THIS YEAR 300,000 CASES OF NEW ZEALAND APPLES IN COOL STORE' (By Teleeraph.—Special to The Mail.) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day The manager of the. New Zealand 1-j uitgrowers Federation lias informed the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association that the question of additional duty on imported apples had been taken up with the Minister of Customs, but with very little hope of success, as no alterations were being made in the Customs tariff next season. Mr Cone said the. Federation was advised that Tariff revision would be taken up during tiie recess. If evidence, was to be taken, the Association should be on the lookout and see that evidence was given on the matter. Fruitgrowers In other parts of the Dominion were practically unanimous in desiring the duty increased.
Replying to the chairman, he said that the duty at present was Id per lb. It, was absurd that apples should come from America to the extent of 10,000 to 20.000 eases, seeing that New Zealand exported apples and had plenty of apples in cool stores. On July Ist there were 300.000 eases in cool stores, so that it was evident that New Zealand did not want apples from outside.
