IMPORTATIONS FROM RAROTONGA PROTESTS AT CHBISTCHUEOHL (By Telegraph—Special to The Mail) CHRISTCHURCH. This Day At a meeting of the Canterbury Fruitgrowers' Association, Mr C. Dope reported oil lus visit to Wellington to give evidence before the Parliamentary Committee regarding the importation of tomatoes from Rarotonga. lie said he and the other representatives of the New Zealand tomato growls soon saw plainly that they were up against the Government and the Department of Industries and Commerce. Mr \Y. Bucktin regretted that none of the inspectors was present as he would like to have some information as to the black spot that, developed in l.’arotongan tomatoes. He would not say that it was disease, hut it looked much like it. Imported tomatoes were supposed to he inspected as they came in. •Some shipments had looked very bad. The chairman said that the inspectors were very strict in regard to local fruit. Mr llucktin said he did not know why they should tolerate Island tomatoes coming in in such a condition. He thought they could stand closer inspection.
