NAVY LEAGUE
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER (United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day Replying- to a deputation from the Navy League, the Defence Minister, ilon. Rolieston, pointed out that New Zealand had provided a second cruiser and another £IOO,OOO was being provided for 1926-27. If New Zealand went in for a third cruiser it would mean an additional £225,000 in the naval contribution, so raising the vote to the amount suggested by Lord Jellicoe. The Naval Board would have to report and ■the cruiser could not he stationed for another two years. Neither the Defence Department nor the Naval Board thought New Zealand should exercise any functions regarding the Air Force lull considered it wiser to leqve control with the army meanwhile. Mr Coates said the question of a/ third cruiser would bo discussed by him at the Imperial Conference. Before launching into further expenditure he wanted to ensure that the money would be wisely spent. ,He agreed that it was hard to say that New Zealand spent enough on the navy, but they must be perfectly sure that the money for defence was spent on the most modern forms of equipment.
