LICENSING PROSECUTIONS

SEVERAL DEFENDANTS’FINED . f •; '• OTHER. CASES DISMISSED. Several licensing cases, arising out of the Royal Hotel, were dealt with at the Magistrate’s Court ito-day by Mr T. E. Maunsell, SAL All the 'informations \ver« in respect to Sunday', May 30th. . ,J. C. Bony, (Mr Kemnitz), licensee, for selling liquor to Cliff ■ F. Seliwass, pleaded guilty' and was fined £3, costs 7/-. A second information for opening his premises for the sple of liquor was withdrawn. ’ ■Clifford Selnvass for being found on licensed premises after hours- pleaded, guilty and was fined £2, costs 7/-. John Tinker, Albert Hobbs, 'and Jus Hutchinson, three of the crew of tie Aralinra. were charged with being found on the hotel after the legal closing hours. Mr W. V. Rout appeared for defendants, who pleaded not guilty. The defence was that the men had called to see a friend—a lodger—who had paid for the drinks. After evidence, the Magistrate said he would treat the matter as a social call, although there was a little doubt about the matter. If it liad 'been a temperance hotel perhaps they -would not have paid the call. How'ever, he was not justified iii inferring that defendants went to the hotel for liquor. Arthur A. Woolf, barman at tile hotel, was charged (1) with supplying Jas Snowden, apparently under the age of 21, with' liquor; (2) supplying kquor to Jas. Snowden; and (3) supplying liquor to Kenneth Marshall. On the first charge the information was dismissed, the Magistrate remarking that Snowden was a big lad for his age (18); and fines of £2, costs 7/-, were imposed on each of the other two charges. Mr Kemnitz, appeared for defendant. 'K. Marshall, for being found on licensed premises after hours w'as fined £l, costs 7/-; and Jas. Snowden, similarly charged, was fined £2, costs 7/-.
