MOTUEKA

C A LEDONI AN SOCIETY CHAIRMAN’S REPORT At the annual general meeting of tlio Molue.ka Caledonian Society the following report was read : —“1 expect every •nifentber of the Society -has a very lair idea of what has been done by the executive, during the past twelve months, so that a very short review from me wilt be all that is necessary. 'The New Year's gathering was a decided success; and thanks to line walher, wase very largely allended hv the general public. \Ve offered the biggest programme of Highland events in the Dominion, the actual amount paid out in prizes being £76 10s, medals in addition. Members will see by the balance sheet that we made a small profit but it is hardly necessary to remind them that real gains cannot be. estimated in terms of mere pounds, shillings and pence. The main object of our society, I lake it, is to foster friendship and good feeling among not only Scotchmen but our neighbours generally; and who, fov instance, can determine the value of the bond which has been forged between tho province of Marlborough and the district of Motueka, in the course of the last Lwo years, purely by the agency of our Society. Wellington also sent her quota last New Year’s Day and may bo lelied upon in the future. 'We made‘our first attempt' at a Burns’ n'igh’t. The committee were perhaps someviluit ambitions and, we were prepared fdr ,the .small loss, about £7 10s -which resulted ; but the new committee Wguld "be well advised to repeat the experiment in 'the coming year. Indeed, I believe a monthly! meeting on the lines carried' out bv the Invercargill Society should be tried! The Society started the year with a membership of about a dozen, who acted practically as committee. Since then the number has, gone up to 72 and the society has been duly incorporated. Now we own about £2O of assets in the form of a stage, books of rules, etc., and a cash balance of £3O odd at the bank, so I think we may congratulate ourselves on a very good year’s work. Special gre clue to our energetic and capable secretary, Mr ,0. A. Banner, aud also To our vice-president, Mr Brough, ’for his untiring efforts in collecting donations; and prizes. The whole committee worked exceedingly hard and cordially together and members should feel, proud of them. Oiiv united thanks are due to the many irieiids who donated prizes and helped in the strenuous work on New Year’s Day. Some months; ago we had a visit from Mr Nimriio, presi- \ dent of the Wellington Society, wnen a lew of the committee met at Dr. Bath- 1 gate’s residence arid spent a very plea-; sant couple of hours, and learnt much concerning the Wellington I '“The 'president and office hearers received' an invitation from Mr and Mrs Glennie of Blenheim to attend the marriage of their daughter Stella to Mr John McFariane, pipe-major of the Blenheim Society, on April 15th at St. Andrew’s Church. The request of course, had to be complied with and your president .With Mr -Brough. and Mr Jock •Thomson . journeved thither in due •course. Time will not permit of any full description of this memorable function; sufficient to say that the whole ceremony was fully 'Highland and your rep- j resentatives did their best to uphold the ancient traditions of the Motueka Cale-! donian Society.” • j
