LOCAL AND GENERAL

That everything in Nature, including the human animal, has a purpose in existing was the contention of MiGeorge Manning, Dominion secretary of the W.E.A., in a speech at the Beckeniuun P.S.A., says the Lyttelton Times. The purpose of the flower, he said, was to produce the best possible specimen of its kind. Under ideal conditions of environment, that was attained. So also the purpose of man was to reproduce the species and to develop both sides of his nature. Arguing from the premise of Aristotle that man is a social animal, Mr Manning showed that only by the development of the mind through participation in the activities of the various social groups (hat had been organised could perfection be attained. The man who went home, after his day's work was done, had his meal and then .sat in front of the fire reading his newspaper, was of no use to the community. But- by taking an active part in the discussions and work of such bodies as the Church (which safeguarded morals), Friendly Societies (which encouraged the benevolent spirit), sports clubs (which fostered fair play),, trades unions (which were for the purpose of obtaining shorter hours and better pay for working men), an environment was obtained that helped men to develop (heir mental capabilities and prevented them becoming like so many men to-day —lop-sided.

A most successful carnival is being hold in connection witli the Queen's Park School, Wanganui. The voting for the queens closed last Tuesday, with the result, that Miss Dorcijii Moye (Standard VI) .was elected, Jier votes totalling Tlie net proceeds to hand are ovef £270, and it is expected that the total will easily reach £3OO. This will carry subsidy, so that the committee hope to have somewhere in the vicinity of £6OO to spend on improvements. It is hoped to jnake the environment of this beautiful school second to none in Uie Dominion. Included in the contemplated improvements are handsome entrance gates, re-placing of the wireless set by latest up-to-date equipment and loud speaker, two new tennis courts and pavilion, installation of electric light throughout, asphalting, planting of shade frees, basket ball court, rose gardens and beautifying generally. The carnival concludes with a monster concert and the crowning of the queen in the Opera House on the 18th insfc. A deputation from the South Canterbury Power Board to Mr Coates asked when the second transmission line from Coleridge fca,Timaru would be completed, also for information regarding the development of a second source of supply in South Canterbury. Mr O. A. Givey, inspecting electrical engineer to th© Public Works Department, said in reply to Mr Coates that the second line would be through by the end of August. Regarding a second source Mr Coates stated that according to calculations the rest of the installation should be started in 1927. It would be a mistake to say definitely whether it would be in South Canterbury or not, as all data, must be examined. Replying to Mr Rolleston, Miß Gavey said the new Coleridge, unit would be operating in July.—Press Association.

Smoker's heart is a distressing malady caused chiefly through the effects of an alkaloid called Nicotine which is extremely pbisonius. Strong tobacco with a higli percentage of nicotine should therefore'be avoided. When selecting a brand, the smoker should not be guided by appearance alone, because even an apparently mild cigarette tobacco of a bright lemon colour may contain—and often does contain—an excess of nicotine. It is a peculiar fact that certain N.Z. soils produce a leaf with a very small percentage of nicotine, compared with the foreign type. Take for instance our local brands lliverhead Gold Cut Plug xVo. 10 and Toasted Navy Cut, There you have an. absolutely pure article, which can be smoked continuously without the slightest after effects. It burns to the last shred, leaving the mouth sweet and clean. So highly is New Zealand tobacco commented upon by doctors and experts that smokers should acquaint themselves with the merits of our own product by giving the above brands a fair trial.*- -
