TRIBUTE TO KITCHENER
BY PRINCE OF WALES (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON. June 9. A striking tribute to Lord Kitchener was paid hv the Prince of Wales when unveiling a statue to the FieldMarshal at the Horseguards Parade. He dwelt on Kitchener’s work in Egypt in freeing the Sudan and guaranteeing the prosperity of the Egyptians; then in South Africa, where his object was not so much to subjugate those in arms against him as thereafter to harness the free energies of the great dominion to the coming needs of a great Empire. The Prince quoted General Birdwood as saying that but for Kitchener’s work of reorganising the armies in India she could never have m,ade her great .contribution during the war. After referring to Kitchener’s setting in order of the military house in Australia and New Zealand, whence came the irresistible Anzac armies, the Prince concluded by dwelling on Kitchener's work during the great war in transferring England into a mighty military power the arbiter of the destinies of the world.
