NO UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS

FOR CHRISTCHURCH SECONDARY SCHOOLS AX UNENVIABLE POSITION ihv Telegraph —Special to Tb« Mail.) CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. In ;in editorial to-night's Star makes the following comments: —The Christchurch secondary schools again occupy an unenviable position in the examination lists for the University Junior Scholarships and University National Scholarships. Of the thirty scholarships awarded this year Auckland managed to get eleven and Wellington nine, but Christ church lias not succeeded in getting one, although the list extends to> sixteen schools in all parts of New Zealand. This failure of Gliristehureh schools is discreditable, not much to the pupils as to the teachers, who for several years past seem to have failed to realise the importance of assisting their candidates to secure the very substantial advantaegs of free University education which tlie scholarships offer. It seems rather unsporting of the teachers to excuse their failures on the plea that the brighter candidates ought not to be forced on at the expense of the rank and file of the school. In sport it is all very well to set the game above the prize, but the precept does not apply where boys' future or girls' is at stake, hi fact "the game" is the winning of scholarships, and if there exists a policy that leads to the wholesale failure of Canterbury candidates it might very well be inquired into by the governing bodies of the schools concerned."'
