NEWMAN SHIELD
MATCH POSTPONED The Newman Shield match, Nelson v. Waimea, set down to* commence this forenoon, was postponed until 10 o'clock to-morrow owing to rain. 11AWKE CUP MATCH AVERAGES Averages are always interesting, and in view of the great interest now taken in the Hawke Uup games the following figures will provide interesting reading. While over a period they are a valuable record, the series of Nelson's Cup games has unquestionably shown once more that they are not by any means final evidence of respective abilities. In some of Nelson's hard fought games, innings of 20 or 30 have often proved more valuable than some of double the number in another match, while two or three wickets in a critical match may have more value than half-a-dozen in other circumstances. As Nelson has now played 12 of these games, only those who have played in thre e of them or have taken ten wickets are. included in the main table.
Also Batted: Biggar. 2 innings, 137 runs: S. Newman 4 (18), 2 not outs; Scare)! 1 (31); Evles 1 (20); Vercoe 2 (10): Sixtus 1 (2 not out); Alcott 1 (5): Bvder 2 (3): Bowers 1 (9); S. Miller 1 (0' not. out); Boss Eden 1 (2). As :i result of this seasons' two games Beg. Eden rises from 14th place with 12 to third witli 26. and M. Eden from 10th with 14 to 4th with 24. Now that, the two have struck their proper form in rep. games it makes the Nelson halting a vastly different proposition. To date 30 players have taken part in the 12 games, but only nine have played in half of them. BOWLING
