NELSON'S WATER SUPPLY

PI.F.NTV VC>\l DOMESTIC USE

lIOSIXG CAUSING SIIOiTI'ACK The city water supply was cut <d'f Inst evening until this morning in otucr to allow an invest'eat ion to be nwule of the Rroolc Stleet main, which it was believed might be blookod. The main was cut. near the old quarry, and it was found that the How of water was very small indeed. The Engineer (.Mr J. G. Littlejohn) is making further investigations in order to I race the seat of the trouble.

In the course of a conversation with the Mayor (Mr Lock) ami the Engineer. it was slated that the dam is full, and that there is ample water available for the ordinary domestic supply. (.'harts of the consumption from the weir show that the consnmptin.ll increases tremendously during watering hours; and they also show that'll good deal of watering is being done out of authorised hours. The peak load for domestic purposes is 9 a.m., after which the consumption drops away until watering is commenced ill the evening.

As showing the capacity of the mains, it was stated that the meter reading showed during the scrub lire at Port Nelson last week that. 26,00(3 gallons passed through in an hour. An instance of the quantity of water used in a week by half the town during October, when riot much watering would be done, was shown by tire chart to be 5.', million gallons. Jt was stated that the meter at the main dam is not at present'working, due to lack of flow. An endeavour is being made to find the reason. As before stated, the reason for the restricted hours for watering is not oil account of shortage, but in order to give residents in till parts of the city an opportunity toi get a supply. Even, however, with the present method adopted of giving certain parts of the city certain hours for watering, residents on some of the high levels complain that' very little, or no water at all. can be obtained during these periods.
