GIRL GUIDE CONCERT
SPLENDID PROGRAMME SUBMIT
Th e concert given in the Theatre Royal last evening in order to provide funds towards the expenses of two Nelson representatives of the Dominion Girl Guides at Sydney camp was a splendid success so far as the programme submitted was concerned : but the public failed to support it as deserved. Some of thc best local talent assisted, anil everv item was deservedly encored.
Speaking to explain the object of the concert Airs Moncrieff said it was to send two Girl Cuides to the Australian State Camp with Lady .Marjorie Dalrymple. tl was customary whenever sending representatives anywhere to give them some assistance from the s'l.'ieiy they wore representing. Unl'ortu--1 natly, this the local Guide Association was quite unable to do, owing to the fact that the membership was too small. For the wbole of the preceding year £l7 was the Association funds, on which as stated at the annual meeting 382 Guides had been raised. This fact meant that whenever anything extra arose the committee, wore ignominously reduced to pestering the public, a thing they absolutely detested having lo do. However. it could only he. remedied by more people joining the Association and thus ensuring a larger margin for the Association to work on. .Mrs Moncrieff also emphatically contradicted the statement that if the .11. Q. Auckland could afford to pay Lady Marjorie Dalrympies' expenses from Hume to come to- New Zealand that it could well afford to pay for their own girls to goto Australia..' She stated that i.ady Marjorie had c e out entirely under her own steam and that she had not cost New Zealand Guides anything up to date. When she returned from Australia and t,. k over .Mrs Wilson, the Dominion Commissioner's work, to relieve her for six mouths, her expenses would lie paid. Speaking of the two Guides chosen to go to Australia. Mrs Moncrieff said that two liner girls could not have been eh. ■•on- thev Had helped win the -lellicoe Shield and ai.-o got many badges, so that even in Australia they would make their mark and do credit to the Province they Wei e l'< - presenting. At the same time .': was even more important that they had .in Iru Guide spirit to which their "r.i iehbotirs coaid attest. they having bad pi i's of their living up to their creed. "Service to others." ' Thanking .Mrs Milner and Mr Letts, the Commissioner stated that they were both Guide enthusiasts, and to have raised a concert in so short a time was marvellous. That too artists who had consented to give their services were busy she knew, which made it all tlie 'more lW> tua! they hail so generously given their .--up port.
