Accused, through ids solicitor. Mr Ouglov, pleaded guilty. "This man." said counsel, ‘'admits llu* dii’oneo with which lie is charged. All 1 can say in extenuation is that he is not one of the big men. nor is lie of an aggressive type. He has not caused any trouble to the police, and does not frequent the town or hotels for the purpose ot betting. He is a man who hears an excellent character, and never previously has he been before Court ot. any charge.” Detective-Sergeant Qitirke said the accused laid been betting for a considerable time, being in a fairly large way of business. When the raid was made yesterday by the police lie had taken IH7 in bets over the telephone in an hour and a quarter. Accused had also been doing fairly large business in the country and had a Rost Cilice box under the name of "Anderson." lie had an elaborate‘code arrangement for doing business with various places in tinNorth Island. Owing to the large seal. 1 on which the accused was doing business he would ask for the maximum line to be imposed. In imposing the maximum line of Cl llO. the Magistrate said the accused would have been liable to a greater penalty if he had been charged with hookmaking.
