Th*e most important developments in the shipping strike has been the refusal of the watersiders to load coaistal vessels manned bv volunteer labour. On all these vessels cooks and stewards also left employment, but the management was able Jo fill the vacancies. A call was made for volunteer wharf labourers and sufficient are already engaged to cope with the handling of ships in port. V£ith the exception of one or two steamers all the coastal fleet is able to keep running.
STEAMER CAST ADRIFT
MELBOURNE, This Day
During tli night the volunteer crew of the steamer Awaroa was awakened by voices on the wharf 'and it was found that the moorings of the vessel had been slipped and she was drifting into midstream. The crew succeeded in getting lines to the wharf again and making her fast.
