“BEATING THE PISTOL”
OPOSSUM TRAPPERS CONVICTED
BIG HAUL OF SKINS
(United Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, This Day. Spurred hv the knowledge of good prices obtainable for skins some opossum trappers decided to emulate the early bird and did not wait for the official date of the opening of the trapping district in tlie Wellington acclimatisation district and rangers, suspecting the occupants of a. camp in the Wairarapa were engaged in poaching opossums, paid an unheralded call and found 254 skins, which they seized. Two campers subsequently faced the magistrate, who ordered them to pay fines of £5 each and directed the skins to be forfeited. They were subsequently sold and realized seven shillings each. The fines and receipts from the sales went into the acclimitisatiou society’s coffers. The season begins on Ist July and lasts six weeks and the license costs 50,- in addition to which one shilling per skin royalty has to be paid. The number of licenses issued this season, 54, is a record. The skins bring good prices, and it is recorded that some which were sold by trappers for a. few shillings two seasons ago were shipped to New Voiß, where they realised £3/10/- each, j
