APPLEBY NOTES

With tiie advent of fine weather fanners tire once more getting busy on the land and teams are to be seen on every hand preparing for the spring sowing. The continual damp weather of the last few weeks and the entire absence, ot wind has had a disastrous effect on the cow yards. Mild is tho prevailing feature and the demand among llie dairy farmers for gum boots lias, been extreme- j ly keen. Although the weather has been so tin-] settled, the river has remained almost I normal, and it is now some months sdneo j it, overflowed the road at the western i end of the bridge. It will he interesting j to see what happens when a Hood does; conic. During the past, six months' thousands of tons of gravel have been' removed from the river bed near the bridge, most of it from the eastern side. ' The removal of so much metal trout J this iside has lowered the bed of /the river considerably, and it is quite prob- | able that the next flood will, cause the 1 river u> flow along the eastern side of the river-bed instead of the western as at present. If this happens the danger to the. Western approach will be removed, and Appleby residents will breathe freely once more. It is pleasing to know that the Appleby library is to re-open at the beginning of August. For some years now it, ha-s been practically non-existent, and anyone needing a book to read went and helped himself. However, this free and easy method is now going to stop. A .strong management committee has been formed ,and a determined effort- will be made in tiie near future to raise funds so that new hooks may be purchased. It, is to be Imped that shortly everyone in the district will have at his disposal, if lie so wishes, a plentiful supply of good wholesome reading matter.
