In [lie presence of 10.000 people ami in fine weather on a heavy grmmd the New Xenia ml League football team scored their initial win el the tour by defeating Newcastle and Maitland dis triel at Newcastle by 29 to 11. The came was patchy and sometimes uninteresting. Newcastle's defeat was mainly due to lost, opportunities and faulty passing. A feature of the game was Duffy s goal kicking and long lint* kicks. Although Newcastle almost invariably won the bill I from the scrums they handled it badly and were unable to follow tip t : lu* advantage. New Zealand forced the game strongly in the first half and led tit the interval by 11 to 3. In the second spell Newcastle s hickling wits deadly, but the visitors’ superior weight told. I’he game was very fast in this spell and the locals were holding the visitors weli. the score lit teen minutes before imside whistle sounded being 11—8 in favour ot New Zealand. At this stage New Zealand ran away with the game and added the extra, points in the last ton minutes. The scorers for New Zealand were: Brown (2j. Dufty, Saunders, \\ enllu-rull. Herring and Avery tries and Dulty four goals. The scorers tor Newcastle were : Syme, Brown (2) tries and Hodgens one goal.
