SHIPPING DISPUTE
NO FRESH DEVELOPEMENTS (By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian ft N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, July 19. Pending Tuesday's conference there are no developments in the shipping strike. The whole of the inter-State trade is now practically at a standstill hut the costal services are being maintained by free labour. HIVERINA FIVE MEN SHORT _ HOBART, July 19. The Rivenria sailed for Sydney five inen short. Just before the departure it was discovered that three firemen were missing. Officers and engineers scoured the fcity and suburbs in motor cabs searching for the absentees and found one and took him aboard. Then to prevent the remainder 'of the crew leaving the ship the gangway was cut away with axes, and officers and stewards cast off the lines, -the crew refusing to touch the ropes.
BOTH SIDES PREPARED FOR SETTLEMENT MELBOURNE, July 19. Mr Holloway, secretary of the Trades Hall Council, states that both the owners and seamen are prepared for a settlement. He believes that guarantees Will be given at Tuesday’s conference that Unionists will make no further trouble. MELBOURNE, This Day. New' factors which have been introduced into the negotiations for a settlement of the shipping trouble is a request on the part of the representatives of the Seamen’s Union that a special tribunal should be constituted to deal with future disputes and problems of the shipping industry. It is understood the proposal will be placed before the owners when the parties meet to-mor-row. It is expected the proposal will be met by a definite refusal, the owners holding that a proper tribunal already exists in the Arbitration Court for a settlement of disputes. When the.wharf labourers Were called on to load the coastal steamers Marrawah and Kooringa-, which are manned by volunteer labour, they refused to do so and the vessels were loaded by the office sta of the owners and other labour that the firm could engage.
