PRODUCTION ING SHORT TIME. PECTING WAIKATO COAL TRADE L There are four large companies operating in the Waikato. 2. Taiipiri Coal Mines, Ltd., Waipa Railway and Collieries, Ltd., Pukemiro Collieries, Ltd., Glerc Afton Collieries. 3. The above companies are collectively capable of producing an annual output of 640,000 tons. 4. The sales from above for the past year totalled only 490,000 tons therefore the existing mines are capable of producing 150,000 tons more than the markets will absorb. 5. Development of electrical energy has and will more seriously reduce the'consumption of coal. 6. As proof of the above the Waikato mines are now, in the middle of Winter, working short time. 7. At the present time three of the principal collieries have averaged 1 1-2 days per week idle time since Ist January; owing to shortage of trade, and now in the middle of winter are not working full time, an unprecedented feature in the trade. 8. Owing to the abnormal conditions due to the War, which obtained a few years ago a shortage of coal existed. These conditions do not now prevail as already proved. Upon completion of the Arapuni electrical installation many large consumers of Waikato coal will electrify, causing a much decreased demand for coal amounting to half the output of one of the principal mines now operating.
