RUGBY FOOTBALL

PRIMARY SCHOOL COMPETITIONS On Friday afternoon, several teams fiom the various Nelson schools turned out at the Park to play off their fixtures. Seme surprisingly good football was shown and the Rugby Union* officials who were at the Park were delighted with the standard reached in so short a time. In particular did the Boys’ Central bantam A team excel itself. The boys, for the most part, from Standards ill and IV, played like veterans and. in their straight running and clean passing set an example which many senior teams would do well to follow. The defeated Tahuna bantams by 26 to nil and practically every try came from beautiful passing rushes. Burridge, a fast- centre, did most of the scoring; but it was the well-timed parsing of the inside backs ihat put him over, usually with his wing in attendance. Karsten, secondfive. picked up in the ruck and potted a very neat goal. Logan, first-five, though he failed to score, was quite the best back on the field. The forwards were an unselfish, hard-working lot, and gave the hall to the hacks on every possible occasion. Once, when pressed, they took the ball from one end of the field to the other, were held up, heeled to their backs, and Burridge scored. In the senior division Boys’ Central proved too strong for Tahuna. defeating them 27 to nil. Central were two men short and this upset their combination a little. Nevertheless they gave a good exhibition. Turley and Nock were the best, backs and Johnson the chief stover. Convent, and Boys’ Central B plavecf a drawn game. Both teams looked like scoring on occasions but lacked the necessary finish to their movements. Tite winning teams are: —Central bantam A: Brown, Young. Robson. Newman. Day, Morris, Busch. Logan. Karsten. Burridge, MePike, McKenzie. Burns; Central senior A: Drummond. Hughes, Jennens, Ricketts, Lonisson. Hewlett. Johnson. Turley, Delaney, Nock, Hawthorn (2), Chapman.
