A SHUNTER’S DEATH
WARNING NOT HEARD OWING TO BLOAYI/vG OFF OF b'rx/Lfi (United Ureas Association.) PALMERSTON N., June 10. An inquest concerning the death ol Denis Murpliv, shunter. who was killed by being run over by trucks in the local railway yards early on the morning of 3rd June, was held to-day. lho evidence showed that the deceased, alter making up a train for l’aekaknnki, walked on to the platform, and then crossed in front of the engine of that train. which had been blowing on steam. He proceeded to cross the .second set of rails, and a line of trucks on these rails knocked him down, and thirteen wagons passed over his bcdv. An employee shouted a warning to H e deceased. ' but the blowing off of U e steam prevented bis hearing. "Inc cellared did not see Hie trucks.^ In reply to the Coroner, .Mr Yo-ltz, representative of the Railway Department said the blowing oil ol steam could not, be eliminated.
The Coroner returned a verdict of accidental death, and said that in view of the dangerous nature ol the work themen had to perform, and the risks they look, the Department should do something to relieve the congestion in the yards. The lighting of the yards was not suflicieiii. Regarding the bloving oil of steam, the Department might- ieokinto the matter and see whether it us possible to minimise the danger so caused.
