OBITUARY
MR. ABRAHAM LAIRD The death" occurred yesterday of a very old and respected resident of Port Nelson, in the person of Mr Abraham Laird, at the advanced age of 83 years. The late Mr Laird was one of the. oldest living employees of the Anchor Company, being engineer of the Kennedy and other vessels in tliq stirring times of fifty years ago. For a considerable time past Mr Laird has been living in retirement.
Tile Hags on the Anchor Company’s vessels at Port Nelson were Hying at half mast yesterday as a token of respect to the deceased. The late Mr Laird was lmr.n at Airdrie, Scotland, in 1837. lie went out to Australia, in 1854 and came on to New Zealand from Sydney with troops for the Maori War about 1862. For some time lie was trading between Sydney and Auckland, lie joined up with the Anchor Company in 1865, and like so many others, remained with them for 11i<• rest, of his working life. Mr Laird 'was one of the founders and original members of I In* Marine Engineers’ Inst it ule.
