WELLINGTON, This Dav. An enterprising undertaking having as its principal object the improvement of travelling facilities between Wellington and Picton has been embarked npori by the Union Steamship Company, this consists in the purchase of a twin screw oil burning passenger steamer for use in the Picton ferry service. Negotiations have been in progress for some time and the company has announced that- they had made a contract with Messrs Swan, Hunter and Company, of Newcastle-or.-Tyne for the work. The vessel, which is to burn oil, will be 260 feet in length, with a beam of 38 feet and a depth of 17 feet. She is expected to develop 17 knots, a speed by the way which, the; new Aorangi, now on her way to Vancouver and New Zealand, is reported to have been logging. _ The vessel will have electrical auxiliaries and winches driven by semi-Diesel engines. No effort: is being spared to ensure every accommodation and comfort for the passengers. There will be a spepial smoke room lounge, ladies’ saloon, arid on the lower deck a men’s saloon. Provision has also been made for the carriage of motor cars, and ample promenade space will be allowed on the decks. The delivery of the vessel will take place on July Ist. , v
