NELSON BOWLING GREEN

1 r -‘ l<r *' IMPRESSIONS OF A VISITOR In forwarding a . panoramic view of tlie Nelson Bowling Green to Sir W. D. Shinn, of Invercargill, Mr Wilkinson 1 asked him what impression lie formed oi the green during a visit to Nelson and t how it compared with anything he had ■ seen (in his travels. Mr iSlunn has i'or- | warded the following reply:— ! “One of the features of the sporting side 6f the Dominidro is the large number of howling greens, most of which i are tastefully- laid out and always improve the locality in which they are situated. Hardly a town of any importance is without its green, on which enthusiasts in the game of games may he seen any afternoon" cr evi'rt'rng 'during the summer months. Oil visiting Nelson recently, the first time in years, the writer was agreeably surprised ‘ to see the delightfully laid out greens of the Nelson Club. The place which but two years ago was a piece of waste laud sup* i porting a few old gum trees, has been so transformed, that it is It pler.sui'e’to see. It is charmingly situated'and the grounds are artistically 'set" but in rockeries, rose garden and shrubberies, and forms a valuable asset" >to l the »toWn. There are two full sized greens which already have a very good 'Maying surface, and the Club drh to be Warndy congratulated on possessing so valuable a property. -The property alongside has also been purchased, having on it a substantial house, tlie basement cf which forms a good billiard room, etc. Besides- this, there l is space-- for tennis courts or croquet greens. This place is something more t-lwin a bowling green, for it is a snlendid illustration of what can bo done by one mail’s enthusiasm plus brains and hard work. Few will cfeiiy the happy conditions under which’ the Nelson Bowling Club members now enjoy their favourite game, are largely the result of the work of one of their members, Mr Av Wilkinson, who, with an enthusiasm beyond praise, has worked to make this plaeo a garden of tlei light.'” ’ '
