Cable Association) TOKIO, Dec. 27. v The Otaru, with a cargo of gunpowder which she was unloading at the pierside, exploded. There were many casualties. A fire started, which is spreading to the city. Further details are unknown. The explosion occurred in a compound at a station where 865 cases of dynamite were being unloaded, all of which exploded owing to one box being dropped. The station, with the coal and goods yards, were set on five. Several lighters were sunk and buildings in the neighbourhood shattered. Fifty persons were killed, ' fifty ,seriously wounded, and 280 suffered slight- injuries.
