MR. ATMORE’S SELECTION FOR HOUSE COMMITTEE

CRITICISED IN HOUSE

Objection to the member for Nelson being included in the committee to draw up reasons for disagreeing with liu Legislative Council’s amendments to the Mortgages Final Extension Bill, was raised m the House of Representatives early on Friday morning. After tbe motion to disagree with tbe Council’s Amendments had been carried, the Prime Minister moved that a committee conrioting of Messrs Parr, Atmore and himself siimdd be set up to prepare reasons for disagreeing with the amendments. Mr R. Masters (Stratford) protested against the selection of Mr Atmore. Mr Atmore bad voted for the original Bill to end the moratorium on 31st December next.

Tbe Prime Minister: "I don’t know what Mr Atmore is. What is usual is llu’s: Representative men are selected on loth sides of t.be. question. Who will say that I. have riot, selected representative members?”

Mr Masters: "1 will say it. Wind about the bon. member for Nelson?”

Mr Massey: "1 have not spoken to Mr Atmore on the subject. I take it Pai be is a reasonable member, although he Is on the other side of the House. 1 think he twill do the right, thing.” He. wanted Mr Masters to say whether Air Atmore was in favour of the atnemimoiiUi made in the Legislative Council. Mr Masters: "1 cannot tell you.”

The Prime Minister: "Well, the lion, gentleman should not raise questions that he knows nothing about.”

Mr 0. Forbes (Hurunui Remarked that Mr Atmore had been opposed to the extension of tbe moratorium. Mr Massey said be chose bis own men.

Mr .Masters .said the committee was most unfair. Mr Atmore bad opposed the extension"of the moratorium on every occasion in the House.

Mr Massey: ‘‘lf there is any objection to Mr Atmore. I am willing to replace him by the addition of Mr Forbes. It was finally decided that (lie committee should consist of Messrs Forbes, Parr. Savage, and Massey.
