UPPER MOUTERE
PROPOSED TELEPHONE EXCHANGE
A meeting was held at Upper Moutero on Thursday evening to consider the question of opening a telephone exchange in that district. Despite the very adverse weather conditions there wtis a fair attendance of residents. The conditions under which an exchange could bo obtained and tlie various charges were explained in detail by the Telegraph Engineer. Satisfaction was, expressed at the small expense entailed to obtain the facilities incidental to an exchange. The matter was taken up enthusiastically, and it was decided to canvass the district for signatures to a petition asking for the establishment of a telephone exchange. The majority of those present at the meeting signified their willingness to become subscribers. It was pointed out that it would be necessary to obtain 25 subscribers before an exchange would be authorised, and if 51 subscribers joined up the hours of attendance would bo from 7 a.in. to 9 p.m. It was the opinion of the meeting that there would bo no difficulty in obtaining 25 signatures, and an effort is to be made to obtain the number necessary to gain the extended hours of attendance. It was -pointed out that Upper Moutore was the mostbackward in the Nclspn district in regard to telephone facilities. There is no doubt that an exchange at. this centre would eventually include Mio settlers of the surrounding districts of Neudorf, Mahana, and Bronte.
