DAMAGE TO FOOTPATHS

action by city council

The following circular proposed to be sent to carters and builders was submitted by the City Engineer to the Council last evening : . . “The attention of those requiring to deliver materials across footpaths is directed to the City By-law and Police Offences Act which prohibits the taking of any vehicle across or over any footpath. where there is no properly constructed crossing, and also prohibits the deposit of any materials upon any street or public place without the permission of the Council first being obtained. Those whom it may concern are hereby warned that in addition to proceedings for the recovery of the cost of repairs, proceedings will also be taken against any person committing an offence against these provisions in the future.” In some supplementary remarks the Engineer stated: — “I would suggest that the Council adop the foregoing. There seems to be an utter disregard on the part of drivers of vehicles for the public footpaths and tho Council is constantly being put to expense to repair asphalt and kerbs. The depositing of gravel, manure, firewood on the footpaths should also be stopped, as well as the using of the footpaths as a builders’ yard.” During the course of the ensuing, discussion, councillors expressed the opinion that if the regulations were carried out in a reasonable manner no great inconvenience Would be caused. It was also pointed but,- however, that footpaths had been considerably damaged. It was resolved that the recommendations made by the Engineer concerning the matter' be approved of, it being un- ’• derstood that discretion would be used in enforcing them.
