Jn his report to t-he Nelson Progress League Mr Burt gave an estimate of the carrying capacity of two valleys in the Bui for as 37,000 sheep. The particular valleys are tho Gowan and the Buller above the Gowan. Another crowded house greeted the performance of the Private secretary at tho Theatre Royal last evening. Ail taking part are to be heartily congratulated. While the Nelson Amateur Dramatic and Operatic Society is able to attain the present high level it will receive full measure of public support. The society’s well-known producer, Air Foster, was not present last evening, but so well did those taking part acquit themselves that his absence was not felt in any way whatever.

The present pupils of Air and Airs H. S. Ciaughtion will give a concert in the Alarsden Church Hall on Tuesday week, the 27th of August. The. items will include instrumental and vocal solos, duets and part songs. The junior concert will begin at 7.30, and the intermediate and senior grade pupils’ concert at 8.15. Thirty to. forty pupils will take part. Admission is free. Pupils may reserve seats lor their parents or friends on application to their teacher.

There will he three special services at St. John’s -Methodist, Church tomorrow, on the occasion of the Choir Festival. The Rev. H. L. Blamires will conduct the services. The choir will sing the anthem, "Be merciful unto me” (Shaw)Ant, the morning service, and Airs W. D. Murdock will give the harp solo, “Phantasm” (Schuecker). At 6.30 p.ni. the address wilt be on “The Place of Music in Religion,’ ’and the anthems will bo “How lovely are ■ the messengers” (.Mendelssohn), and “Saviour, breathe an evening blessing” (Keighley). “Airs Alurdock will play on the harp Hasselman’s “Pricre.” The concluding service will he at 8 p.m., when the sacred cantata, “The Holy City,” will be rendered by an augmented c-hoir, with soloists and choruses, conducted by Mr F. Mitchell. Mrs Murdock will play the harp accompaniment. The offertory at the cantata will be devoted to choir funds.

What promises to he one of the most successful balls of the season will bo held in the Y.M.C.A. Hall on Wednesday, August 27th. The Victory Tennis Club ran a very successful ball last season, which was greatly appro dated by the dancing public. A specia’ orchestra has been obtained and a record gathering is anticipated. Wild pigs continue to commit extensive depreciations in the Hawke’s Bay back country, and there are few of the outer stations at which pig-hunters are not welcome. The pigs work havoc among lambs, in the pastures, and on the fences. In places they have been so active that bonuses of Is or more per tail have been offered to pig-liunters. Authority has been given by the City Council for the electrical engineer to carry out, the work of electrically lighting the four faces of the town clock at Ihe Post Office. At present it is possible to refer to the time-piece only in the day-time ; and the Council’s action will fin’d considerable public favour. Members of the Old English Game Club are reminded of the annual meeting advertised to be held in the Institute Rooms this evening at 7.30.

The Oddfellows’ social committee are holding a euchre tournament with dance and supper after. Special prizes for euchre will be given. All players invited to a good time.

Over 250 ratepayers have already signed the ptition for a poll on rating on unimproved values. Only 120 more names are required to secure a poll.
