A strong effort, is being made to encourage the cultivation of tobacco in New Zealand for local manufacture. There are now about 40 growers in Nelson, as well as an increasing number in Auckland and Wellington, and a few in Hawke’s Bay. It has been found that tho best blends are obtained by utilising leaf from dmerent districts, and the Manufacturers aro holding out every induooment to growers by supplying tl era with tho necessary seed aim taking tneir output at varying prices up to 2s per ib. Just at present the factory is vcrir.T g at full capacity, but additional inecl inery is being installed to deal witn the increased business offering, -»d itu'ii-g this month an effort is being made- to increase the cultivation. The seed is now being planted, for planting, cut in September, and t-ho crop yields at cut 8001 b. of leaf to the acre.
