HAMPDEN STREET SCHOOL
MEETING OF THE COMMITTEE
A special meeting of the School Committee was held in the schoolroom bn Thursday evening to consider the appointment of a headmaster in succession to Mr R. Irwin, who lias been appointed to the Queen’s Park School, Wanganui. The following members were present: Mesdames W. Carrol Harley and , LPage, Messrs E. J. Scantlebury !chairman). J. Wigzell, W. Mitchener, P. E. Tones, F. Ada-mson arid A. i Robinson. An apology was received for the absence of Mr F. V. Knapp. There, were sixteen applications for the position and it was decided to endorse the recommendation of the Education Board appointing Mr A. T. D. East, first assistant at the Brooklyn School. Wellington, as headmaster at Hampden. Street. Mr East, although comparatively a young mail, has had 20 years’ experience in the teaching profession. He holds the B.A. degree and a B certificate, ano while at Brooklyn has had. charge of the hoys’ sports in addition to his other duties." Mr East saw active service durine the war and was severely wounded, and for bravery is the holder of the Serbian Gold Medal.. . ■ . ... The committee decided, m view of the present state of the playground,-.to employ a man for several days and to ■procure several loads of gravel.. A resolution was carried thanking the teachers for their co-operation in connection with the arrangements at the farewell to Mr R. Irwm and. for providing afternoon tea for the visitors. Gratification was expressed by members at the re-election of the committee’s nominee. Mr F. W. 0. Smith, ns a member for the Nelson urban area on the Education Board.
