At the monthly meeting ol' the Coiling wood County Council there were ■present: Chairman \A.II. Fletcher), Cr's. 1,. Flowers, C. L. Grant'. J. Richards, D. Davis, and C. F. Lammas. Correspondence was received irom:—■ K. 1\ Hudson, M.P., forwarding - letter received from the Minister of Public Works acknowledging letters in regard to a grant of .£IOOO for Pa-' tuvavT road, and petition of : Pupongn ratepayers, etc., and letter from mine manager, Puponga colliery urging the formation of the gap in PakawauPuponga road, and stating that 'lie shall be pleased to give the matters his careful consideration when the estimates are being prepared. Wash bourn complains that his access to the CollingwoodTakaka road is, cut off by the stoppage oi the road to section 64 “Milnthorpp Suburban,” and consequently lie has to make a big detour, and suggesting that the difficulty could he overcome by having tho Proclamation stopping the portion of road revolted in part under section 5 of the Land Oct 1003. H. P. Waslibourn ro same and staling that he wishes to purchase that portion of the closed road bordering .section 64. —Resolved that Council favours the Proclamation stopping the portion of roacl being revolted in part, and that, in respect to tho portion of dosed road bordering section 6.4, the Council are of .opinion that it should be advertised and sold in the usual way.

F. Freeman, complaining of washout at Swamp Creek fordway.—Resolved that it bo left to Engineer. Tenders': —The following tenders were received for metalling Bainham rnncl G. Tibbie £45: M. L. Wallace £6O; •T. Langford £67. —Resolved, that Mr Tibbie’s' tender be accepted. Interview. —Mr A. Berry waited on the Council objecting to pipes being put across the road at Kahuna School to drain the school ground, as he considered it would cause-damage t.<>. the banks of tho river and eventually the bridge.—The chairman stated the Council would go into the matter. Resolved, that the general rate f :r* year 1924-25 be 2td in the. £. and that a rebate of 5 per. cent be allowed onall general- rates paid before the expo at.ion of 40 days from due date. Cr. Flowers voted -against. Tho’ Council adjourned at 6 p.m. : view the wharf site, arid on resuming' i' was decided that the chairman interview the manager of the Anchor Shipping Company, to see if satisfactory arrangement could be made in regard to direct shipping to Wellington, and if satisfactory the Engineer prepare plans for an extension to the

Tho date of next meeting was fixed for 2nd August. lie- fencing the Pakawau-Puponga leadline.—The chairman said he hoped the Council would soon lie in a position to call tenders. The matter had been made easier by Mr E. R. Fletcher and Air R. P. Riley generously providing posts. About £IOO in cash \ as in hand or promised, and if a little more could be collected the cost of

wire and erection would be provided for. The Engineer reported : Coilingwood Riding.—During the month heavy seas did some damage to: the beach' road; and the main road i.bar Saltwater Creek, destroying part, of stono \vall at both places. Mr', Strange had asked that the cleaning tut of creek on Swamp-road be Hold over for a fortnight us he was going away and matter would be attended to on his return. Paraparn Riding.—A small bridge, between Wakakiora Creek and Otere. Creek collapsed, and had been repair-* ed. - Waiertablcs had been cleaned out <n Kaituna and Waslibourn hills' and; small channel cut through on bend, above. Para para bridge to ease the,' pressure on betid near, the road. Rockville Riding.—'Lower Kaituna road should be closed for wheel traf fie owing to river erosion. A notice had been put, up to this effect. Air Solly; suggsts doing the repairs himself, and: asks that the Council give him tho netting wire that- was proposed to be, used before, the erosion took, place.— Ohe footbridge near Kaituna. bridge was also inspected, and H was suggesti ed that 100 additional l'eet. be erected. 'The question of erecting a 12it -euW < ert was also discussed, Air Hiekmoii offering to liil in approach for Is peryard. The estimated 'cost of foot-.’ bridge if erected will lie £l6 and con-' ceto culvert and idling £4OO. A, few : days’ Work will complete-Riley’s Factory bridge and approaches. ‘.-The dayman has been engaged tor a week cutting off water on Alac-kay’s Pass road. Bainham Riding.—Some patching’ had been done on Bonny Doon road, Bninluim by-road, and main road at Twin brilges. Air Tibbie had made

good progress with Jeffries Creek bridge. The work was completed except filling approaches and removing timber. Walker’s Miff Creek bridge vas completed except for approaches and macadam top on bridge. Palawan Hiding.—About 15ft- of stone wall on Pakawau main road was destroyed by heavy seas on 23rd June and hacl been repaired. Saltwater wis destroying the galvanised wire anl it- would be cheaper to do further repairs in concrete. Puponga. Riding.—Slow progress was being made with the formation and metalling contract between tipper and lower township. Owing to so much uct. weather and the cutting up of the road on the hill the work is lu'id up at piesont. '1 have arranged for repairs to bo done at Slippery Rock. Wosthaven Riding.—Although the' weather has been very bad, fair pro-

gress lias been made, with Paturau * load contract. All timber is on the site, but planks have yet to be pit sawn. The, , erection of culverts can now lie gone on with. General..-/The lime had arrived for' consideration to be given to the transport of metal on the roads. A central' depot should be made on south side. o ; Coilingwood-Ferntown. A bin should be erected lo hold, say, 20 or 30 cubic yards of metal where a lorry could back in on solid ground. A tramline could lie lain to the river bed, where plenty of metal is available. A 1 rry could also be used to advantage on Pavapiira road where they could back into pits, bonding of course is the only drawback, blit a portable elevator could be usol to advantage. These machines are not, very expensive cm! no doubt would pay for themselves within the first year of their use. It was decided that the matter, of footbridge to Fish’s be. held over, that the Fngincer prepare and estimate of cost of concrete/groynes at. Fenitown bridge. ;and report more fully on the matter of an elevator for gravel more fullv for next meeting.
