BRIGHTWATER

POST OFFICE MATTERS

(From Our Own Correspondent),

The public meeting at Brightwater on Thursday evening last to consider Post Office matters was unanimously in favour of adhering to the first proposal which was to urge that a portion of the railway reserve facing the main road; nearly opposite to the old Post Office, be secured, and that the old Court house be moved on to it and used as a Post Office. The Justice Department is willing to grant the Court House, which is of recent structure, but the Minister of Railways has not yet given his 'consent to the transfer of the site. Speakers at the meeting pointed out that the site asked for was really an odd corner that would never be used for railway purposes, hut which was admirably suited for the purpose of a post office. Seldom it is that unanimity is reached in regard to a site for a post office, but Thursday’s meeting proved that Brightwater people are solid for the site mentioned. Steps are being taken i.o gel Mr Atmore M.P., to urge upon the Minister of Railways the desirability of granting the site selected to the Postal authorities. The engineer in charge has everything in readiness to proceed with the new telephone exchange and expects to have his gang at work erecting the lines next week. Between forty and fifty have all ready signed the necessary application forms for connection and it is confidently'hoped that the exchange will open with enough subscribers to warrant the 7 a-m. to 9 p.m. extension which will bo a boon to the district.
