LONDON, June 25. At Wimbledon, the second round of the dav was full of’ thrills and suiprises." Wimbledon has not seen finer tennis than Lacoste defeating Manuel Alonso, 2—6, 6—2, 13 10, 6—6, 6 I. Lacoste was versatile and brilliant, and Iris passing shots were untiring. Alonso was magnificent with his forehand, network, and volleying, but tired after the third set. Three Americans, Hunter, Richards, and Mashburn, entered the third round; likewise the Britishers, Gilbert, _ Kingscote, Greig, Leighton Crawford, and Wheatley.. The-'Frenchman, Joan Borotra, beat Woosnam, 6—3, < o, 9_6 6 4. In the lathes’ first round, Mdlle. Lenglen beat Miss Dumbey-e-llis 6—o, -6—o; Miss Wills beat Miss Sehannan 6—l, 6—o; Miss Ryan beat Mrs Bouevrie, 6—o, 6 — o. Bayley and Willard, the Australian Olympic tennis players, provided a sensation in the Wimbledon matches against the two leading Britishers'. Tiavle- beat Lycett 7 —s.V 6—4, 3—6, 6_13. Willard had bad luck in bis match against the Davis Cup member, Wheatley. He appeared to have the o-ame well in hand, but developed sever cramps in the deciding set, which compelled him to retire, the match *hus going to Wheatley, 4 o, / o, £ j y 2 l.
