DUNEDIN, This Day

A professional 15-round contest between Tommy Fairhall and Eugene Volaire for a purse of £l5O went the full distance, Fairhall winning comfortably on points. The opening round pi o\ ided ii sensational incident. Halfnay through Volaire connected with a solid left to Fail-hall's point. The Australian fell back on his back, his head striking the floor with considerable force. He managed to sit at .'he count of six and got to his feet at eight. He staggered to the ropes, \ here he leant helpless. Volaire then lost his head and rushed in to finish i iin off. He rained blows home while Fairhall was against the ropes. At last the Australian staggered across the ring, where the Frenchman again got him on the ropes. From tliero Fairhall staggered to his own corner, Volaire punching himself to a standstill. Fairhall then literally fell into a clinch and hung on, the gong saving him-. Had Volaire not become rattled r.nd measured his'opponent with one good effective blow, he must have non the fight in the first round. Local opinion was that Fairhall was at least unconscious in the next two rounds. The Australian himself stated that he did not wake up till the eighth rdund. The fight between Andy Affords ajid Larchie McDonald, ten rounds, for a purse of £25, was won on points comfortably by McDonald.
