ECHO OF RAILWAY STRIKE
A GUARD PROSECUTED

WANGANUI, June 16
An echo of the recent railway strike was heard in the Magistrate's Court today. when Charles Downcv, a guard, was charged with using insulting language on the Kai-iwi station platform on 24th April, with intent to provoke a breach of the peace. Evidence given showed that when the skeleton service train reached Kai-iwi there was a group of men on the platform, and Downey remarked to Inspector Mirams _ that lie would not he a b scab. the 'JL rat - fie Inspector replied: "I will get olf, and you get on the train.” Accused replied, again using the word “scab.” Defendant said hp merely asked in a friendly wav bow the inspector liked the job and" when the. latter offered to let liim run the train, he said lie would not be a “scab.” The Magistrate said he was satisfied the charge had been proved. Defendant was foolish to have used the expression. He inflicted a fine £2 10s., with £1 14s costs, in default 14 days. It was | stated that defendant had 20 years’ unblemished record service. _
