CATHOLIC MISSION

LARGE ATTENDANCES

Considerable interest has been created amongst the members of the Catholic community by tlie Mission at present taking place at St. Alary’s Church. The seating accommodation of the church has been taxed every evening, whilst over three hundred approach the altar rails for Holy Communion at the 6 and 7 o’clock Masses. This, the Rev. Father McCarthy regards as the supreme test of appreciation —the test of sacrifice. On Monday evening the missioner delivered a thrilling discourse on the subject of “Sin—the enemy of God and man.” “God,” he said, “has a right to the homage of his creatures—for creation gives the strongest rights to ownership. This claim is recognised by the whole of creation. Alan alone challenges the right of God to his abedience. Sin implies a revolt of man against God—whereby right order is destroyed.; the Creator’s sovereignty is denied; His justice defied ; His goodness outraged and denied.” In graphic language the preacher went on to describe the hideous ugliness and the disastrous consequences of sin. Last night the subject dealt with was “Death —the Great Assize.” It wag a powerful oration for one hour that deeply stirred the hearts of the hearers.
