LEGISLATORS’ ORGY
SCENES AT ALBANY MUNICIPALITY TO BE “CLEANED UP” (By Electrio Telegraph.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, May 5. A telegram from Albany says that emulating Philadelphia’s example this c : ty engaged a military officer to clean up the municipality, which is charged with being vice-stricken. Albany is the capital of New York State, and when the Legislature ended its session last week, it is alleged that legislators .indulged in a last-moment orgy, in which liqnor flowed freely, there were roulette, faro and pool rooms, where race track betting occurred within a few squares of the capital building, the so-called red light district, and also within the neighbourhood of special hotel for legislators conveniently located. Mayor Hackett declared that the police were inefficient and corrupt, and the force will be thoroughly reformed and bootleggers driven out of the city. Numerous arrests have already occurred, and bootleggers who operate from the Canadian border, making Albany the centre of their activities, have been warned to stay outside the city limits.
