During last year classes in agriculture were conducted at schools in the Nelson Education Board district and instruction given to 1319 pupils. The annual report of the chairman of the Education Board states that the district and the number of schools are too large to enable one instructor to get satisfactory results and the hope is expressed that assistance will be provided for Mr Bruce during the coming year. The supervisor reports a very pleasing improvement in the school gardens throughout the district.

The Secretary of the Education Board (Mr J. H. Thornton) explained to the Education Board yesterday why nothing had been done to arrange for school children visiting the Squadron in Wellington. He stated that be had made inquiries from the shipping company and the school committees to so© if it would be possible to organise an excursion ; but the difficulties were found to be so great that it was found impossible to do anything. Members of the Board regretted that the children were unable to make the trip; but recognised the difficulties which were in the way.

Mclntyre mentioned at the Education Board meeting yesterday, while the appointment of teachersliips was under consideration, that although a first assistant for Millerfon had been advertised for three months, only one uncortificated teacher had applied. This was clear proof, he said, that unless the Department is prepared to give a greater incentive to teachers to go into the backblocks the children in these districts would suffer thereby.
