A resident of Landsdownc (Masterton), who was priding himself on the possession of a half case of well-grown walnuts,-. had reason to suspect that the quantity was daily diminishing, and for a day or so was at a loss to account for the occurrence (relates the Wairarapa Age). ' Quite unexpectedly, a few days later, he'observed a huge rat scuttling across the yard from the shed where the precious nuts were stored, with one in its mouth. Very -patiently, the enterprising rodent returned to tho box and made off with another, till eventually, the resident vouches, the box contained not enough to put on the table for one meal.
