NELSON BAPTIST CHURCH

ANNUAL MEETING -

The 73rd annual meeting of the Nelson Daptjst Church was held on Tuesday evening, there a large attendance of members. The secretary (Mr C. Kershaw) presented the report for the year, the opening paragraph being as follows: “It is with a sense of deep gratitude to God for His manifold mercies towards us that the officers presold their 73rd annual report- to the Church. We feel that having endeavoured. in all our ways to acknowledge Him, He has directed our path.” During the year extensive alteration _ and repairs have been made to the buildings at a cost of about £4OO, with the result that the property is now in good order. The past year has been noted for the completion’ of the Memorial Pipe Organ at a .cost of £6OO, the whole of winch was subscribed before the opening. “We thank God that our desire to open it free from debt has been realised, and trust that it may prove a great help to the singing and’a means of blessing to us as a church.” Further improvements to the property are -mitieipated and it is hoped that the present year will see a new infant school erected, end several classrooms provided. The roll cumber now stand at 213, in increase cf four on last- year: admission 12; removed by death’ 3; transferred 5. The report- dealt extensively with all the activities of the church, all branches being in'a flourishing and vigorous condition. The treasurer (Mr A. Robertson) submitted the financial report. The total receipts from ordinary sources were £636 17s Id; special sums raised £433 3s 7d, making the year’s revenue at £I2OB 18s lid. After meeting all liabilities the year closed with a credit balance of £46 17s lid. Among the items of expenditure was repairs to buildings amounting to £348 7s 7d, also balance of £l5O due on pipe organ. The. officers lor the ensuing year are Messrs T. Pettit, F. Cullen, 31. JBlick, W. Day, 11. Sharp, J. Mills, C. Kershaw (secretary), and A. Robertson (treasurer).

SOCIAL GATHERING

The annual social evening was held in the school hall last night, Rev. John Laird presiding o\er a good attendance. The reports were read. Interesting addresses were given by Air H. Wood, who outlined the programme for tho Institute for the-coming year.; V:nd by Mr T. Pettit, who explained the scheme for the proposed alteration, and addition to tlm. school building, making an appeal for a sum of between £3OO and £4OO to carrv out- the work. i

Mr Cullen, the lender of the Young Men’s Bible Class was the recipient of a present to mark the men’s appreciation of the service rendered by their leader ; Mr J. Newton speaking on behalf of the class. Several musical items were given, and the ladies served supper, bringing to a close an interesting series cf meetings.
