LAUNCH IN PERIL
, FISHERMEN’S CLOSE CALL NIGHTJ SPENT IN GALE HAZARDOUS TRIP TO PORT A party of eight Hawera and Paten f’shermen had a rather thrilling but unenviable experience the other day. They went over the Pa tea bar in a 42ft. launch with the intention of fishing. A very heavy sda was encountered, with a south-easterly gale blowing. They struck mountainous seas, which several times threatened to engulf tho little Vessel. A couple of anchors were thrown out, the men awaiting the morning light. They spent an anxious time. After daybreak a steamer travelled utj the coast and attempted to cross the bar, .but owing to the danger abandoned the effort- and returned to Wanganui. Battered bv; wind and sea the fishermen decided .to” make for New Plymouth, which .they r.eachcd about eight o clock on Sunday night. The trip was a most hazardous one, and rll on board were thankful' to reach the haven after the severe buffeting they had received.
