Wish Wynne led to half the distance, when David went ahead and seemed a certain winner, but Lapiue. finishing very fast, just won. by the narrowest margin. Time 1.55.
Spring Handicap: Barosca 1; King's Trumpeter •>; Sandringham 3. King's Trumpeter was greatly fancied and jumped out first, but Barosca soon established a. three lengths' lead over the field and was never headed. Won by two lengths. Time '2.7!j. ' Tramway Handicap : Vaccine 1; Hie Hawk 2; Salrak 3. The NewZealand horse gave away three stone. Grotesque was fourth. Other New Zealaiiders failed to show out. Won easily by two lengths. Time 1.28. Welter Handicap: Larillo 1; Earleun 2; Mountaineer 3. There were 17 starters. Earleton challenged the winner in the straight, and there was i great finish. Wen by half a neck. Time I.4QiJ. The Sydney Sun says that Australians had before regarded David as invincible from the middle distance and u, wards, but he had no sooner proved Ids superiority over the best local horses in the most complete and convincing manifer when the New Zeai land champion Rapine came along and beat him. There was only a neck in it at the finish. The pair certainly st.'-ud nut supreme as stayers. Both are able to carry weight, and it will trke a horse with a big pull in the weights to snatch either the Arotropoliian or the Melbourne Cup from thein. Air Stead, in a press interview, 'further stresses the fact that taxation, rest of travelling and upkeep, are freezing racing out of the Dominion. He instances last year, when he and two other prominent owners won in the vicinity of -£IO,OOO each in stakes, yet showed, a loss on their racing transactions. In regard to the cost of travelling, he states lie railed horses from Hastings to Auckland and back, for which he paid a. cheque of £230. It would have been cheaper to bring the horses to Sydney. He groups three types of New Zealand owners who visit Australia, first those anxious -o match New Zealand's best With Australia's, second those anxious to sell their horses, and third those unable-to make ends meet in New Zealand, and who are after tempting prizes in Australia.
