UMPIRE THEATRE UIE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO”
TO-NIGHT
In translating Alexandre Dumas’ famous novel, “The Count of Monte Oristo,” to the screen, William iPox, the noted picture producer, deterlaiihied that no expense should he spared fro make the production historically and scenically accurate Alexandre Dumas, in his novel “Monte Cristo,” writes of an island by that name which many of his readers suppose is entirely mythical. This is not true, as this island is to-day inhabited and belongs to the Italian Government. Only six miles square, it coo tains the ruins of a Camaldulensian monastery founded in the thirteenth century and destroyed in the sixteenth century. The island is the prHmtje proFperty of the King of Italy, who maintains a splendid hunting lodge there. This island, according to the fertile brain of the great author, was the one which contained the buried treasure which was found by Edmond Dantes, after hik escape from the Chateau D’lf. . A vivid picture of this treasure is shown in the William Fox special production, “Monte Cristo,” ip which John Gilbert has the
:ole of the ill-fated young sailor lad. This wonderful picturisation of a wonderful novel will be initially shown at tlio Empire Theatre tins evening.
