HEAVY FINES
FAILURE TO SEND INCOME-TAX RETURNS (United Pi ess Association). AUCKLAND, July 20. At the Police Court, Cyril S. C. Clarko and Harold K. Clarke, two dental surgeons in business as Kean and Clarke Bros., at Whangarei, were Oricli fined £IOO on each of four charges of having failed to furnish .income tax returns, plus expenses. Each defendant will have to pay £4OO. The defendants had made no returns for seven years, and the Government has been defrauded of a considerable sum, said counsel for tho Crpwn. There was no suggestion that defendants had endeavoured to defraud, hut they had failed in their obligations. Counsel for the defence questioned the extent of taxation payable, and added that his clients had paid all other taxes.
Mr J. W. Poyntou, S.M., said, on a triple assessment, defendants were liable for £4OOO that wore due to the State.
