DEALING WITH EMIGRANTS
PROBLEM IN UNITED STATES
(By Electric Telegraph—Copyright). (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association)
NEW YORK, July 21 Some idea of the problem set rue United States in coping with the enforcement of tho immigration law can be gained from the fact that 28,000 immigrants were admitted to Ellis Island alone during the first three weeks of July. A hundred inspectors worked day and night subjecting the incomers to minute examination. Twelve hundred immigrants, a considerable number of whom were British, have been ireranied pending the decision of the Washington authorities on their cases. The larger ruinber of these will he deported. Owing to the large numbers of arrivals and the limited accommodation, many immigrants suffer great discomforts, especially recently during the prolonged heat spell, despite the efforts ot officials to reduce the suffering to a minimum.
