RUGBY FOOTBALL

Tikaokao 12 v. Huia 9,

The. senior match on Saturday was a keenly contested game and afforded the spectators ample room for speculation as to which would be the winning team. Had the match been won by Huias the cup must necessarily have gone to the Wanderers, but under the present circumstances Tikaokaos have a- sporting chance, and may yet nnnext the cup. The next match,'or possibly two matches. between ■‘Tikaokaos and Wanderers will cause considerable local interest.

■ Early in the first spell J. Tnglis openen the scoring for Whites (Tikaokaos)' by securing a try; no goal resulted. This was followed by give and take play for a while, until L. Knapp (Green) put in one of his long range goals from a penalty and equalised the scores. Another good but unsuccessful attempt to score by Huias was made per medium of Kirwin from a ‘lmyrk. Play next saw Whites on the defensive, and after being bard pressed for some time eventually cleared. Greens renewed the attack, and after a short scramble on the goal line, Fox scored. Knapp failed to convert. This put Huias 3 points in the load at half time. In the second spell. Greens were early on the defensive, and within a few minutes IT. Goodall got through and scored near the eornr jyj. No goal resulted. Play now became general, and if anything in favour of Tikaokaos. Latter the ball was carried close to Whites’ goal line, and from a penalty L. Knapp secured a goal. &b tills stage B. Knapp (Green) received a

kick, and was replaced by Trewavas. Whites commenced to attack strongly, and securing the hall from a scrum, Bradley made a tine dash through the Greens’ hacks and scored. Clarke failed to convert. Close on time Huias were penalized and A. Fry, on the second kick, the first being rushed, put the ball over.

Tikaoaos played somewhat at a disadvantage oil Saturday considering that some five of its members were indisposed and w;ere replaced by Clarke, Goodall (2), C. •Jennings and C. Goodall, three of these being juniors. Huias outstanding players were W arn* er, Fox, Wratt, Knapp and Still, while Bradley, Clarke, R. Fry, Hiekmott and Young were probably the pick of the Tikaokaos. Mr Banner ably carried out the duties of referee.

JUNIOR The junior match on Saturday could scarcely he called a- good exhibition of football. Greens (Huias) opened the scoring hv Drogemuller kicking a goal fiom a penalty. This was soon equalized by Askew securing a try for Blacks (Wanderers); no goal resulted. From a good pass Skilton found Greens’ goal line and scored. Ropata. failed to convert. Play during the latter part of the first half was decidedly in favour of Blacks.

In the second spell. Greens attacked strongly and allowed Beatty to score a. try near the corner peg, no goal resulting. Trewavas made, a fine dash for Blacks ’goal line and would have got through had not Ropata saved the situation. Give and take play ensued for a time, then Blacks carried the ball into Greens’ territory, and after a few minutes Francois was able to score. Tfowler failed at gosd. Mr A. Drummond acted as referee.

3RD CLASS The result of the match Huias v. Nelson was rather surprising, considering that the visitors were a. much heavier pack than the home team. Greens (Huias) kept Nelson well in hand, thy former being on the defensive most of the time. .Shortly after the kick off Nelson attacked strongly and a force down resulted. From a penalty the visitors made a good hut unsuccessful attempt at. goal. Greens returned the attack, and after a passing bout Rogers got through and scored —no goal. In liio second spell Nelson was still unable to score. G. Fowler, from a penalty, kicked a goal, while later on R. Taylor reached Nelson’s goal line, and brought Greens’ score up to nine points. Mr Reed refereed the match.

HOCKEY The first m'atch for the Moana Cup was plaved on Saturday between Moana and Riwaka. Moana went on the field one player short. After a fairly even name, Riwaka. won by two goals to nil. The first spell ended" with Riwaka one goal in the lead, the goal being obtained ivy R. Fowler, who" secured the hall from a. nice centre hack from the goal lino by W. Young. A. Dunn (Moana) narrowly missed scoring, shortly before half time. Riwaka’s second goal came from a nice centre by the right wing to R. Fowler, who was in the right spot to receive the hall. Moana forwards had good openings, hut failed to take advantage of them. For Riwaka Mrs Rowntree played her usual sterling game at centre-half 0. Young, full back, played her best game this season. Misses Young, Drummond, Fowler and Francois did useful work in the forward line. For Moana, Misses Dunn anw M. Weller did the hulk of the forward work, and G. Weller, M. O’Brien and H. Boyes sone up well in the back division.
