EARLY VERSION DISCOVERED (By Electric Telegraph—Copyrightj (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association).
LONDON, July 3 A copy of one of the earliest Coptic versions of' St. John’s Gospel is being exhibited at University College. It is dated 400 A.D., and has not yet been translated, but it seems certain that it will throw Important light on , Bible study hv showing how tho Greek; text of the Gospels was interpreted in Egypt in the fifth century. v
The copy was found written, on about 100 leaves’ of papyrus, wrapped in rags and buried in a pot in the Qua el Ivebir cemetery. Apparently it was hastily hidden during tho Moslem invasion of Egypt. The cemetery is a great hill of rock, riddled with tombs, 30 miles south of Asvut. Neat* by were found fossilized human bones, which tvr Flinders Petrie estimates are at least 50,000 years old. These bones were *ollected by some ivory worker, and found in his studio along with ivory carvings in various stages of completion.
