THAT Mr R. P. Hudson, member for Motueka, has the best claim on the Government to fill the Cabinet vacancy, is widely acknowledged, lie is a senior member, and has a reputation for solid worth in and out of the House. His qualifications are well recognised in this district. He is essentially a man of very sound commonsense —level-headed and practical. In every way be is well qualified to render wider service to the Dominion as a Cabinet (Minister. So far as the representation of the two Islands is concerned, while it is not desired to stress that factor above personal merit, here is an instance where Mr Massey can give the South Island the representation it deserves and at the same time secure services of a colleague well qualified for Cabinet, rank. The opportunity presents itself for the Government to appoint a South Island Minister whose capacity for office will not be questioned anywhere. Mt Atmore, member for Nelson, is a strong supporter of Mr Hudson’s claims, as are also many others who do not see eye to eye with him politically, but recognise solid worth wherever it may be. The fact that Mr Hudson’s electorate extends to the West Coast is also a matter that should not he overlooked. Such an appointment would give satisfaction and a feeling of greater confidence in the Cabinet over a very large portion of the South Island.
