DESTRUCTIVE FIRE
(United Press Association),
WAIROA, Tins- Day
One of the most disastrous fires in the history of the town occurred early this morning resulting in the complete destruction of the Wairoa Hotel. Every-, body’s Theatre, and two shops with dwellings attached. The Duco - garage adjoining, was salved by an improvised bucket brigade. There was no water supply or fire fighting appliances. Fortunately there was a southerly wind, otherwise much greater damage must, have resulted.
The bqarders, including Chief Judge Jones of the Native Land Court, Magistrate Lcvvy, and several commercial travellers had narrow escapes, - losing practically everything and escaping in their nightclothes. The origin of the fire is unknown, but it' is thought it started in a small storeroom of the hotel unstairs.
A boarder naniKl Airs Hook fell down the fire escape sustaining a sprained ankle, and two boarders had scorched hands and were badly burned. / The insurances are unavailable.
