A revival of ancient pomp marked the new Caliph's holding of the Selamik (religious, observance) at Scutari. He erossd. the Rosphorus in a picturesque antique fourieen-onred caique, curiously painted with a frieze and tinkers ill arabesques and adorned with a caned gilt l»eak-!ike prow surmounted by a large silver image of a strange bird, said to represent a phoenix. The craft lias not been seen for many years. It wall steerd by a helmsman in green and gold, and the oarsmen were, clad in the traditional baggy breeches, all in white except for black waistcoats and red fezes. The Sultan flow for the first time his new personal standard as Caliph. It is of green, with white star and orescent on a scarlet centre, from which emanate white rays. General Sir C. Harington and the diplomats, with a great concourse of Scutari people, wore present at the landing, from which the Caliph went to the mosque, escorted by a scarlet uniformed bodyguard of lancers and preceded liv a naval band.
